K - 1 lessons are full of important instructional objectives and thinking skills. For example, last week students listened and responded to The Important Book by Margaret Wise Brown. After reading, looking for patterns, and sharing thoughts on this book, students were asked to use the same pattern to write about plants, the science unit first graders were completing. In addition to being fun and informative, it was a great way for students to share what they had learned about plants and to clear up any misconceptions about plants. Students who finished quickly were offered a 2nd page to complete on any topic of their choice. Almost all of them chose plants!
The Virginia Beach learning objectives for this book include:
ELA.1.6.3 Make connections before, during, and after reading text
ELA.1.8.2 Write in a variety of forms, including writing to inform/explain, to offer an opinion, and t to narrate an experience (personal narrative)
ELA.1.8.3 Generate ideas.
ELA.1.8.4 Focus on one topic.
ELA.1.8.5 Revise by adding descriptive words when writing about people, places, things, and events.
ELA.1.8.6 Embed vocabulary from other content areas in writing tasks.
SCI.14.1 Describe plant characteristics.
Based on the Gifted Benchmarks for grades K - 1, we looked for:
Creative Thinking: Record unique details that children find important.
Logical Thinking: Record students who can fill in the pattern. Record students who can explain what the pattern is for the overall book.
Metacognition: What have you learned today? What was the easiest part of making this pattern? What was hard about making the pattern?
I hope you enjoy these stories as much as we did as students shared their knowledge.
